"Tornado's" Myths and Facts!

Tornado Myths and Truths
Myth: Mountains, lakes, and rivers provide protection from tornadoes.
Truth: No area is safe from tornadoes. Tornadoes have been spotted in the Rocky Mountains, moving over lakes, and across rivers.

Myth: Low pressure associated with tornadoes will cause buildings to explode.
Truth: Destructive winds and flying debris hitting a building at very high speeds will cause most of the structural damage.

Myth: Windows must be opened before the tornado arrives in order to equalize the pressure.
Truth: The pressure difference between a house and the tornado is not significant enough to cause an explosion.

Myth: People should seek shelter under highway overpasses.
Truth: Winds can actually be amplified under an overpass, which makes it an extremely dangerous place to be during a tornado.

Myth: The southwest corner of the basement is the safest area to be in a tornado.
Fact: Studies have shown debris will often times collect in any corner of the basement.
